Preview keyboard shortcut highlight bug in Monterey 12.6

Hello helpful people -

Preview has had highlight bugs for a while *with keyboard shortcuts*. I've read other posts. My issue, on a new Air M2 with Monterey 12.6:

1. I selected from the menu Tools->Annotate->Highlight, then I highlight text in a pdf.

2. I want to return to return to normal text selection (no highlight) and select Tools-> Text Selection

3. But the highlighting-annotation (yellow) functionality remains stuck. I cannot get back to normal text highlight (blue) for copy & paste.

* Highlight de-selects properly if I mouse-click the button on toolbar.

* However I wish to make this process work by keyboard shortcut, as I constantly toggle btw highlight & text select.

Image attached showing Text Selection highlighted but getting stuck in Annotation functionality

Any ideas? Bug? Thanks!

Hello jacob_h82,

You mentioned that you're running macOS Monterey 12.6. The most up to date version of Monterey is 12.6.2 and these updates often include fixes for unexpected behavior. Let's start with getting your Mac up to date using the steps in Update macOS on Mac.

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.
  2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.
  3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

If you continue to experience the same issue after updating, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support. They'll be best equipped to investigate this a bit more.

Take care!

Hello jacob_h82,

Welcome back to Apple Support Communities!

We want to get the issue resolved so you can highlight the text as expected.

Try a normal restart of your Mac to see if that helps refresh the software and resolve the issue:

"Restart your Mac

  • On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart.
  • If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”"

If the issue continues, please reach out to an Apple Support Advisor for further assistance: Get Support

Cheers!
