Just want to disable the widget thingy below the clock altogether. Not have it running at all.

You can choose to show widgets or not by clicking "Edit Widgets". Is that what you mean?
That is basically on "Never" but Widgets keep appearing when I am trying to work in Mail and am sliding the cursor from right to left.
Correction...I meant I am frustrated because I can't turn the entire widget app off...
If you are working in Mail and new Mail arrives, by default, it will float in as a Notification, not a Widget. There are per application Notification settings in System Preferences/Settings where you can actually slide Allow Notifications off for Apple Mail.
I see. That's not possible.
There probably is but through the command line. Just can't find it on the WorldWideDatabase.
Good luck finding one. FWIW, you would want to look for disabling the Notification Center.
