Printer presets not saving

Since upgrading to Ventura, my printer presets are not saving. I already had working printer presets in place before upgrading, such as 2 page B&W from drawer three. Part of the preset works. It will print 2 page B&W, but it doesn't pull specifically from drawer three. I've only noticed a problem in the drawer selection and the scaling options. I tried creating new presets and those didn't work either. I also updated the driver and it didn't correct it.

I've read posts from other people will similar issues, but the only responses I see are how to set up a preset. Not knowing how to create a preset is clearly not the issue. It doesn't seem to be printer specific (this happens with my Brother printer and my Canon printer), nor computer specific (this happens with both of my Macs). I had hoped this would be fixed with 13.1, but the problem still exists. Any ideas?

Hi bvoyl,

If your printer presets are not saving, we'd recommend first following the steps outlined here and make sure you're following exactly as outlined: Save frequently used print settings for routine printing on Mac

This will ensure that things are set properly. If you're already doing that, and still have issues; we'd recommend reaching out directly to Apple to look into this with you further to resolve this: Get Support

Cheers.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I had an issue where the wife's iMac with Ventura wouldn't print in color despite the fact the presets were correct, etc. I believe I had set black & white to be the default but despite selecting color in the App and in the printer presets it still printed in black & white. I had to remove the printer in macOS and re-install it. Then it started working. It was an HP Color LaserJet M452dn and I had installed the HP Smart App from the App Store to help with installing the proper drivers. Mileage may vary with other printers but it might be a bug in Ventura where removing and re-installing the printer resets the preset configurations.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. It happens on EVERY computer, not just a specific computer, and I'm very familiar with adding presets, having done so successfully for years. So far, I have been unable to find a single Mac running MacOS Ventura that will save the paper source as a preset; I have tried five so far. The Safe Mode method prescribed by "Old Toad" did not work either.

If I select a specific drawer and save the preset, it will automatically return to Auto the next time I use it. I do a lot of printing on a daily basis, and I need different jobs to be printed from different drawers. I find this extremely annoying. The presets worked before Ventura. Until there is an actual fix, I believe the only option is to downgrade the MacOS.

You may have used it for years but with each new system it becomes more destructive. It's. considered by most of the experienced contributors here to be akin to malware. Just do a google search: site: discussions.apple.com cleanmymac and you'll get a multitude of posts where CMM seriously compromised the system's or an apps performance.

Why? There is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

User CMM's uninstler and then you can check to see if you've removed all of the supporting files by downloading and running the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with the application's or the developer's name in the file name.  For CMM you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

The engineers at Canon were able to reproduce the issue. It is definitely a compatibility issue with Ventura. Now that they know about it, they are working to find a fix. Thank you all for your suggestions and patience with this. It's not resolved today, but will be in the future.

I can confirm that this is also happening with Toshiba networked printers. Specifically, the Paper Feed selection is not saved either in a Print Job Preset nor in a Custom Preset.

While it seems clear to me that the problem is in macOS, if anyone should find a printer for which this works, it would be nice to hear about.

This is an Apple issue and I am not sure they are aware of it. At least support does not know what is going on.

I am using Ventura on an iMac and Macbook Pro. I print to a Brother and Canon printer. The printers ignore the presets and print to the top tray ( I have 2 paper trays) and the prints are double sided. The only way around this is to set the print settings I want each time I print.

  • Brother said they do not make drivers for Apple any more and I should call Apple.
  • Canon spent a lot of time with me trying to resolve this but said it is not their problem and that while their drivers manage the prints, it is MacOS which manages the print presets.
  • Apple support said they are not responsible for printers.

Hopefully Apple will recognize there is a problem and get this fixed fast.

@msknvw Your last bullet is especially annoying, since the problem is clearly not to do with "the printers." Apple has online documentation (Save frequently used print settings for routine printing on Mac - Apple Support) about how this is supposed to work; they couldn't have documentation if it was a sub-system for which they are not responsible. I would interpret that as a CYA for a problem that Apple Support knows they can't fix, since the problem is within the OS.

Anyhow, I encourage everyone having this issue to file a bug report (Feedback - macOS - Apple). I believe that they do not monitor these Community pages.
