Mail Attachments won't open – hang in "downloading"

Hello, I'm no longer able to download some attachments in Mail. The file says its "downloading..." (see image below), but I can't actually download or save it. I've tried forwarding the message to another account (Gmail) but there's no attachment to open. I've tried Rebuild but there's nothing that says rebuilding is going on in the background (is it?).

This inability to download doesn't happen all the time. Someone sent me a jpg from their iPhone and couldn't open it (sent to my hotmail account). Likewise with this pdf (below) - no dice. But I was able to download a Word document sent from within the same (gmail) account. So it doesn't seem to be a hotmail/gmail issue. Any thoughts on what else I can try?

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012, using High Sierra

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.11

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac

If searching your Mac doesn’t return expected results, rebuilding the Spotlight index might help.

  1. Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Spotlight.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Drag the folder or disk that you want to index again to the list of locations that Spotlight is prevented from searching. Or click the Add (+) button and select the folder or disk to add.
  4. To add an item to the Privacy tab, you must have ownership permissions for that item. To learn about permissions, choose Help from the Finder menu bar, then search for “permissions.”
  5. From the same list of locations, select the folder or disk that you just added. Then click the Remove (–) button to remove it from the list.
  6. Quit System Preferences. Spotlight will reindex the contents of the folder or disk.

If still not working...

Manually Rebuilding Spotlight via Terminal

If the aforementioned Spotlight control panel approach doesn’t spur a reindexation of the drive, you may need to initiate it manually through the command line. Open Terminal and use the following command string to do so:

sudo mdutil -E /

This basically asks for temporary super user status, which is why Terminal may ask you for your password (it may not if you’ve used a sudo command recently or are already logged in as a super user or root. The command asks the unix tool mdutil to reindex the spotlight database for everything on the computer, including external drives, mounted disk images, etc. To re-index only for a specific drive, use the /Volumes path. For example, for an external drive named “MiniMe,” the command would look like this:

sudo mdutil -i on /

Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line.

If still need be…

Open Terminal and run each of these one at a time

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

killall Dock

sudo mdutil -E /

sudo mdutil -i on /

Yes, remove any traces of CMM.

Uninstall CleanMyMac per their directions , then run etrecheck again to see what chaff it left...

On CMM…

iMac running slow, several apps unrespons… - Apple Community

MBP won't wake from sleep Sierra 10.12.6.… - Apple Community

Boot iMac from external SSD, what happens… - Apple Community

Unable to make any changes to contacts on… - Apple Community

May need to reinstall the OS if that doesn't take care of the problem.

No, I don't have VPN, Anti-Virus or Cleaning apps. I don't think there's MacCleaner on the computer. I got rid of one awhile ago. But this problem with the attachments has happened quite recently. Definitely after I installed High Sierra but not immediately after as far as I can remember.

Right clicking on the attachment yields an odd two options: "copy" or "speech." Copy/paste doesn't result in anything. I'm invited to "start speaking" when I click on speech.

I've received successfully attached files without issue from the same people before...

I tried booting in Safe mode but the response for those attachments was the same. I can see export to photos and save all but trying to do those things results in no response.

Now I will try rebuilding Spotlight. But is the computer searching for the attachment when I'm trying to download? I tried adding the Mail folder, closing Spotlight, returning and subtracting the Mail folder. No permissions roadblocks came up since I'm the administrator (I'm guessing). But also nothing seemed to be happening. Is it just doing something in the background?

I implemented the first terminal command.

Mail is still doing the same thing (downloading ...).

I've found that this has happened with newer technology. For instance, using wired earbuds with my iPhone 6s, I can make a voice memo, email it to myself (Gmail account) and open that attachment without fail. But using very new Airpods with the same phone, making a voice memo and emailing it to myself – it won't open. It says it's downloading and never does. Something similar has happened emailing myself a scanned pdf document – the attachment arrives with 0kb but in Gmail online the attachment shows up fine. ...?

Do you mean this?
