apple watch not pairing needs update

I have an 6 series watch and a 13 phone my phone is update with the latest softwear. However, I am trying to pair my watch and it is telling me that I first need to update. I click update and it will not stating that my watch needs to be connected to wifi. But, without it being paired, I cannot connect it to the wifi. I have tried multiple times and it will not pair and/or update. Any help?
