To help you better, I need some information:

-> Wich macOS version are you running?

-> Which MacBook Air do you have? Is it just a few years old or more than 5 or 6 years?

-> Did it work before?

-> If yes, when did it stop working? Maybe you have some theories why?

Maybe you've forgotten your password or remembered another password, but not the right one.

If this is the case, I strongly recommend you to read this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202860

Anyways, here are some quick fixes for Touch ID, if you're running macOS Ventura (13.0 or newer)

(and you fixed your password problem):

  1. Open System Settings and Open the Touch ID & Pass Code. If there are more than 3 fingerprints declared then remove them (right click & follow the displayed instructions) Or click the "+" Icon and add your fingerprints following the instructions on the screen.

I hope you can solve your problem. Have a nice day and stay healthy!

Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:

(Applies to Intel-Basel Macs Only) Sometimes changes (i.e. Installations) are made to the system and then settings (i.e. Networking) become corrupted, technically. So, reset both on your Mac. So, reset the SMC and reset the NVRAM or PRAM. It might take three tries. to fix this. So, be certain you have the time to do so.
