iCloud and photos

I may sound pretty naive but I thought my photos were stored in ICloud forever, so what is the point of using iCloud if everything is deleted after 180 days ? So far I have been unable to find a definite and convincing awnser. Also I have many duplicate Icloud photo folders ,( some 24000 photos ). How can I safely remove these duplicates without losing the originals in my library? Thankyou someone.

If you have iCloud Photos enabled, your photos will sync between your devices and your iCloud account. Everyone has 5GB of free storage. If you need more space you can rent it from Apple. Provided you continue payment, you can keep your content in iCloud indefinitely. Turn on iCloud Photos at Settings > Photos on an iDevice, or in Photos by enabling iCloud Photos in settings.

not sure how you created duplicate folders. You may have copied items inadvertently. If you’re just copying photos into a photos library and syncing with iCloud Drive, just be sure that your computer reflects the state of the folders you desire so they are synced into iCloud.
