Express Transit (OMNY) Stopped Working After iPhone Update 16.2

Phone is iPhone SE. I was able to use Express Transit easily at NYC Subway entrances (OMNY). Just held the top of the phone at the entrance reader without having to open the phone, or enter the passcode or anything. Nice! But I updated to 16.2 a couple days ago and Express Transit stopped working. The phone was even confused about what card in my wallet to use.


On the iPhone, the Express Transit setting is "On", the correct card is selected but I still have to enter my Passcode (no face recognition on this phone) even though it says right on the Express Transit Card screen: "[card #] will work automatically, without requiring authentication, to pay for transit."


Called OMNY, all my settings on their end are correct so they couldn't help. I called Apple Support # given to me by OMNY help. Apple seemed confused by the question.


Anybody know how to fix this? Thanks!


(PS: This is an "Reduced Fare" OMNY account (senior citizen discount).

I also have a senior citizen discount and had the exact same problem this week (Jan 19 2023). I also just got a new phone. OMNY had been working perfectly and then yesterday the OMNY entrance turned red and said I had exceeded my number of trips. I ended up using my CC and that worked fine but I'd rather use my phone.
