Wrist Detection Notifications Mess

Hi All,

So what I’ve discovered is that Apple employs too many young people that work in quiet offices!

Otherwise, it would be preposterous to design Apple Watches (especially the Ultra) to be the only source of sound notifications when you’re wearing them!

That is, if you want to use the watch’s cool features (like Apple Pay) and have wrist detection on, you forfeit the right to get sound notifications on your iPhone, unless you’ve got the iPhone unlocked and you're looking at it! How ridiculous!

I want notifications when I’m not looking at my phone, not when I am? WTH? 😂

I’m 54, a builder, a bit hard of hearing, and I work in the mines (very noisy), and the only sounds I can get are single beeps off my Ultra, when I can only hear the loudest sounds from my phone.

So Apple please, either give us louder notifications on the watch, or allow us to have notification sounds come from both the phone and watch at the same time?

I think you’ll find that many who bought the Ultra, did so for outdoors, rough and noisy environments and all they get is a beep (oh and a little haptics). Clearly not quiet offices! Please fix this!

Otherwise, I love the watch. The fact that the third party manufacturers are struggling to make anything worthwhile for the Ultra is testament to the fact that it does it all out of the box!

Oh, a watch face purely for complications (I.e., no date or time) would be cool, to keep handy apps and contacts handier by swiping between watch faces!

Of course, you get Haptic announcements from the watch, even if the sound not loud enough. You can even increase the intensity of the "wrist buzz." (Change the audio and notification settings on your Apple Watch - Apple Support) But your concern makes sense. You won't get Apple's attention here, we're all just users like yourself. Why don't you let Apple know? You can do that here:

I couldn’t agree more. Only for me, the biggest problem with not having the notifications on my iPhone when my phone is locked, is that I’ve given certain specific notification sounds to different apps. That way I can hear what kind of notification I’m getting and react to them accordingly.

E.g. I have a Ring cam installed in my backyard. When there’s someone in my backyard, the notification sound on my iPhone lets me know that it is an alert from my Ring cam so I know I have to look on my phone right away.

I also have an app that lets me know when someone in my neighborhood is having a cardiac arrest. On my iPhone I have a very loud and alerting notification sound for this app.

But with my Apple Watch ultra on my wrist, I only get the standard notification sounds of the watch, regardless what app the notification is coming from.

So, reading your complaint about the notification sounds, there are several reasons Apple should do something about this. They should at least give you an option to choose to let the notification sounds sound on your IPhone too. Or another option is to mirror or duplicate the notification sounds from your iPhone to your watch.

Man my phone doesn't show ANY notifications on the lock screen if my Apple Watch has picked it up. I don't know what's going on here. Only with wrist detection off do I get notifications on both and I like having wrist detection on, because it makes sense. Some other power user on a similar post here totally dismissed what someone was saying about this very issue - almost like they're saying "well, you got the notification somehow, right?". What? If I knew I would have to make such a sacrifice, like getting notifications yanked from my phone and only on my watch, I wouldn't have bought it.
