Apple Pay not accepting my AMEX on iPhone & Watch - "you have reached the limit number of devices"

Hi All

I've been struggling for a few days to get my AMEX card loaded onto my iPhone and Watch at the same time. All on latest software etc.

I was getting an error message something like "you have reached the maximum number of devices" - not the max no of cards on the device, but in fact the max no of devices that AMEX can be used on.

Since it always worked previously, I assume that AMEX have introduced a limit on the number of devices. What is strange is that others have reported this issue two or three years ago, but it only hit me this month, December 2022.

The simple solution for me seems to have been to log out of iCloud on my iPhone and then reinstall all the cards (they are stored so that bit is relatively straightforward)

My questions are as follows:

  1. how many devices can I use an Amex on?
  2. how many cards can I have on one device?

many thanks!

Hey TT,

We'll start with the Amex question, and let you know you will need to reach out to their support for the answer to how many devices their card can be associated with. Here is a link to their support: American Express Customer Service & Help Center.

The number of cards that is available to add to Apple Pay isn't documented. You're welcome to reach out to Apple Support directly to see if that information is available: Contact Apple Support

Take care!
