unlock session timed out

When I try to login to AppleID, I get locked message -

This Apple ID has been locked for security reasons.

OK, I try to unlock it (on desktop), choose email, get the email, click the link in email, the email is good, and leads me to happy sounding page

Ready to Unlock

As soon as I click Unlock, I get error

Your session has timed out.

And the only option seems to repeat everything again - leading to same result.

So I'm locked out of AppleID (using a different one here to post the question), with no apparent way to fix it. Any ideas what to do here?

Update: while chatting with Apple support (which was trying to help, but was mostly clueless about the problem or how to correct it), I figured out the solution: use Safari to open the Unlock link that Apple emailed. Apparently, Apple does not test with Chrome, and the unlock site fails in Chrome by "timing out" immediately after unlock attempt. It did work in Safari (which I normally don't use at all).
