The apps are entirely on your iPhone. The same apps should work on any CarPlay unit.
Usually there is one app you install on your iPhone that matches the CarPlay manufacturer and provides some specific functionality. In my truck, the FordPass app in CarPlay switches back to the standard Ford Sync infotainment screen. If I remember right, my iPhone suggested that I download and install it the first time I plugged it in.
