iCloud Drive web page keeps forever loading and freezes tab

I am trying to access iCloud Drive from my pc and it absolutely refuses to load. I tried on both Chrome and Microsoft Edge, both up to date, neither work. I can log into the main page, I can access my Photos, I can access my Notes, I can access everything else, but as soon as I try to access Drive it goes wrong. The page comes up with a partial list of folders at the left but it eternally loads, and then I get a browser message that the page is no longer responding and if I want to try to wait or leave. If I try to go back by pressing the back button, nothing comes up and I have to close the whole tab and open a new one before I can access even the main iCloud page again.

I just want to transfer one single file, is that too much to ask of Apple's systems?

This issue is likely caused by an infinite loop in client-side scripting that is again caused by a specific constellation of user files.

I have attached a screenshot showing that a number of important-sounding browser requests hang in the "Pending" state (retrieveTrashDetails, retrieveItemDetailsInFolders, storageUsageInfo) on my account. I guess the same thing is happening for everybody in this thread.

Apple needs to assign a dev for debugging. Feel free to use my file tree, as long as you don't share it anywhere.

I appreciate your workarounds, but I think that you are being too kind with Apple when you talk about corrupted files/folders. This is not corruption, but most likely an unhandled edge case in the new web client. Reasons:

1. My files loaded properly in the old browser version of icloud.com

2. My files load properly in the Windows version of iCloud

3. My files load properly in the Archives app on my iPhone

So the revamped web app is the odd one out. Any corruption would be there and not in my files. (I get that you can work around the issue if you have the time, but that is not the point.)

Personally, I killed my .Trash folders and a few files that were perpetually syncing, but that did not help. Manually removing and readding 14.000+ files taking up 40+ GB is a massive undertaking that I really hope to avoid.

I am surprised that Apple can't even get a dev to start a debugging session and tell us exactly what is going on and exactly what we can do to work around it.

Hi spiritmuse,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

We're happy to provide some assistance.

When you have a free moment, we recommend you check out the article below. Based on what's happening, you might want to try installing iCloud for Windows to see if that works for you: Set up and use iCloud for Windows

If you're still having the same problem after looking at the thread we provided, do not hesitate to reach back out to the community with some specifics on what you see for more help.

Cheers!

I discovered this problem with iCloud Drive web while trying to resolve why my WhatsApp iPhone to iCloud backup failed since about a month ago.

What I discovered so far is that the Windows iCloud & iPhone files app are unaffected, and it is not an issue with the browser either, wife can access her iCloud Drive on the web using my browser no issues, once she is logged out and I log in, then it either says iCloud Drive is loading or give you the wheel of death - as reported here by another user.

So it is not firewalls or browsers or cookies.

One funny though, once I turned on VPN on my iPhone for work, the WhatsApp backup went through, but the web version of iCloud Drive remains stuck.

Also from the web iCloud tile for Drive I can access files from that tile but not the app itself.

All the other web apps for mail, notes, contacts are unaffected.

Has anybody had success in resolving this?

I have the exact same problem as spiritmuse, but I might be able to add a bit of extra info:

  • For me, the problem coincided with your recent "beta.icloud.com" UX refresh. My iCloud Drive loaded nicely in the good, old format, but it would always hang my browser in the UX refresh. And now that the refresh has gone live I cannot access my files.
  • I have seen the issue in Chrome, Chrome Canary and Firefox on a Windows 10 laptop.
  • Nothing is logged in the browser console. This is a silent hang.

Please reach out if I can assist with further info.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. The posts by Metroid0200 and j-s-b gave me the following idea to cleanup my folder structure on iCoud drive.

Read through to the end before executing!

  1. Back up all content from iCloud drive to your local device into a separate folder.
  2. Delete all content from iCloud from all your devices. Warning: Keep the directories used by individual apps (e.g. Pages, Numbers, ...)
  3. Wait for all deletions to sync.
  4. Sign in to iCloud drive and enjoy.

Greetings.

Thanks this actually worked. On my PC had a hidden .Trash folder in the iCloudDrive folder which I decided to turf with the files. This was recreated (obviously empty) once I put files back on iCloud and performed the first delete & recover actions.

(My WhatsApp issue is unresolved, it only backs up to iCloud if my phone is on VPN seems an unrelated issue)

It worked but not so easily :D

So, the issue is a corrupted folder (even a corrupted root folder).

You can follow the steps from weberhannes.

If (without upload back your folders), you have access to your iCloud Drive on the web, you are in the good way.

Now, you need to reupload your folders.

> If you still have access to your iCloud Drive, you have some luck and the corruption was only on the root directory

> If not, you'll need to remove your folders one after one.

You remove one, and you check if you can access your iCloud Drive.

> If you can access it, this is the folder that have some corruption issues.

> If not, this is not this folder and you can go to the next.

For me, it was a "Personal" folder that contains some personal infos that was corrupted.

Hi, thanks for the detail work. I have also gradually put my directories back into the cloud.

An empty directory caused problems. Once copied to the cloud, the entire structure in the cloud was broken again. Just removing the broken directory didn't help. So I removed and rebuilt the whole structure again.

Note: Other empty directories were generally not a problem.

I totally agree with j-s-b. I pay a monthly subscription fee to use the iCloud for files that we as family use on many devices with many different OS-ses, mostly with Mozilla Firefox. iCloud Drive used to work fine with the old UI, but with the introduction of the new UI, I cannot access my iCloud files with Mozila Firefox on my Fedora 37 MacBook Air 2012, with Safari on my iPhone 11 with iOS16 or with Safari on my Ipad Pro with iPad OS16, nor our Windows 10/11 machines with MS Edge or Mozilla Firefox. All OS-es and browsers are up to date.

The iCloud Files app works as it should on all of our up-to-date iPads and iPhones, but it's the iCloud Files website that hangs during loading! Forever...

I totally understand that things can get broken sometimes, but it's Apple's responsibility to fix their problem. Not mine. I am not going to do Apple's job (and not get paid for it). ...And I don't feel inclined to manually check if one of the 200GB+ of files and maps on our iCloud is "corrupted"...

I expect a response from Apple soon, about what's wrong, how they are going to fix it and when it will be fixed. Every good company that has high quality standards would do such a thing...

But if it takes too long, my "work around" would be to download all my iCloud data on disk, store it somewhere else and terminate our iCloud One subscription. I am not gonna pay for something that does not work properly.
