Does anyone know how to get this screen rotation icon to show up in an app?

This screen rotation icon, the square with a rotation arrow, is on my husbands iPad pro using iPad OS 15 on one app that he was trying to force into landscape. He was 'messing around' and cannot remember what he did to get this to show up. This app is an iphone app that wouldn't go into landscape mode like he wanted it to. Now with this icon the app does go into landscape mode, not just turning an iPhone app to a iPhone sized landscape orientation. But when using this icon to rotate the screen to landscape the whole screen is filled with the app in landscape orientation. This icon is not part of the app itself. I have searched my ipad pro and cannot find how he did this. Does anyone know about this icon and how to get it on your screen to rotate the screen orientation? Thanks for your time.

To switch between Portrait and Landscape view, you generally only need to rotate the iPad to the desired screen orientation.

For newer models of iPad without a side-switch, you may need to disable your Screen Rotation Lock. To do so, you need to access the Control Centre; swipe downwards from the top-right corner of the screen - then tap the Screen Rotation lock icon:

If screen rotation proves to be problem with some Apps - and not others - you need to be aware that not all Apps are coded to operate in both Portrait and Landscape screen modes. Apps that have a fixed screen orientation will always* appear in the orientation determined by the App Developer.

(*) For compatible Apps that are intended for iPhone, iPadOS15 will now automatically rotate the App to display in Landscape screen orientation. There is no manual configuration or setting to enable this feature.

However, Apps designed for iPad that are expressly coded to force Portrait screen orientation, iPadOS15 will honour the intended Portrait mode. iPadOS15 will not override the App coding. However, new for iPadOS16, for iPad models that support Stage Manager, will display Apps that force Portrait mode as Portrait window in Landscape screen orientation.
