Z9

Z9 is listed as a supported camera raw file. But when I try and view it on the phone it just turns black. Is there something wrong?

I may have figured it out, at least partially. I looked at the different RAW compression settings on the Nikon Z9 (which btw does not use SD it used CF Fast/XQD). There are three settings, Lossless Compression, High efficiency *, and High efficiency. I had it set to High efficiency *. When I switched it to Lossless Compression the iPhone was able to read and edit the RAW file. This is a much larger file, unfortunately. ~50 MB vs ~30 MB.

So I am hoping a future iPhone update might give us compatibility to read the High efficiency* RAW compression.

I also figured out the settings and cables to get the iPhone to recognize the camera.

Hi pbinde,

Connecting your camera directly as you mentioned is a great step to try next. That will help isolate whether this happens with the file type or transfer method. You can use the following guidance in Import photos using Apple camera adapters.

"Import photos and videos

To import from your SD card or digital camera, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the adapter to your iOS device.
  2. Connect your digital camera to the adapter by USB or insert an SD card.
  3. Photos should automatically open to the Import tab. If it doesn't, open Photos and tap Import.
  4. Tap Import All to import your content, or tap specific items, then tap Import.
  5. When the import is complete, you might be asked to Keep or Delete the media on the camera or SD card."

Also if continued, to clarify, by that specific raw file, you mean file type. Right? Or just a specific photo? If the issue happens with a specific photo you are transferring, the issue is isolated to the photo itself.

All the best.

Hello pbinde,

Are you connecting this camera directly to the iPhone or transferring these photos from a computer or external drive? When you say these photos turn black, do you mean all of the photos or just specific photos? To confirm, you're viewing these photos in the Apple Photos app? That will isolate the issue further for us.

If you haven't yet, try closing the Photos app, updating, and restarting the iPhone:

  1. Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch
  2. Update your iPhone or iPad
  3. Restart your iPhone

Let us know how it goes and the information from above for further help.

Wishing you well, take care.

Yes viewing in the apple photos app. I airdropped the photos from my computer. (waiting on a good data cable to see if I can connect my camera directly) My D4s I was able to connect directly to my iphone, it would show up in the apple photos app, I could select and save and then edit the raw files right on my phone, great when a client wants a quick image or I want to share something as it is happening.

I have updated the phone and restarted it and closed and reopened the app. none of it helped.

As for the image turning black, it was just that specific raw file. It would show me the image as a thumbnail when it first dropped in but then when I click to make it bigger or edit, it would turn black and that was it.

Thank you!
