Why airplane mode disables gps?

I recently took a picture with the airplane mode on, and my picture didn't record the location information. I think this is a little strange..

I thought airplane mode didn't disable GPS module. Because the GPS module does not transmit, so I don't think it will affect aviation control.

Obviously, a few years ago, even if I took a picture in airplane mode, location information was recorded, and I could see the current location on the Apple map app.

Of course, I couldn't see my current location visually because It couldn't get map data, but at least I could recognize my location by blinking blue dot.

Is this a bug or a new change in the way it works?

Hello tofutree23,

Check out the information on this page: Turn Location Services and GPS on or off on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

iOS and iPadOS devices might use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to determine your location. GPS and cellular location are available on iPhone and iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) models.

Then, look over this information about Airplane mode: Use Airplane Mode on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.

When you turn on Airplane Mode, it turns off all radios except for Bluetooth. If you turn off Bluetooth while you're in Airplane Mode, your device will remember the next time you turn on Airplane Mode.

That being said, when you turn on Airplane Mode, you can open the Control Center and enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and take photos. This should correct the issue. If not, you may want to reach out to Apple directly to further support you with this issue. You can reach out to them by clicking here: Contact Apple Support or over the phone by calling the number that is most local to your region: Contact Apple for support and service.

Best wishes!
