iCloud suddenly re-syncing hundreds of gigs of data...???

Tonight, 12/21/2022, "I was minding my own business, when..." My iCloud is now counting up how much it wants to upload... currently at 536GB and counting up, as it passes 124,000 files. My iCloud has been fully synced for some time, but this just kicked in tonight.

I can't compress folders or move them right now, as it pops up "Compressing..." or "Preparing to move" and just spins. Clicking X on them changes to "Stopping..."

I can't even shut down the computer right now ;-) since it tells me operations are in progress.

Anyone seen this?

Hey there allenhuffman,

While you may need to let iCloud finish syncing files and not try to 'compress' them while the syncing process completes, we'd like to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some general possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that it shows it's currently syncing files, but where exactly is this showing?
  2. Do you have any external storage devices connected to your Mac?
  3. What do you recall doing on your Mac right before this began to show?
  4. What kind of files are you syncing to iCloud from your Mac?
  5. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Cheers!

The compressing had nothing to do with it -- it's just what led me to notice the problem. AppleCare support had no ideas. I let it run overnight, and it was done in the morning (not actually uploading anything, more like it was scanning files and finding they were already in the cloud -- like Backblaze and other backup services do).

Then I got to work, and it started again. Still going at 8pm tonight (see photo).

  1. See photo.
  2. No devices connected.
  3. I was just editing in VS Code and building. Nothing special.
  4. None. Everything was synced months ago, fully complete, to a 2TB plan. Any syncs would just be any new files I would make.
  5. During this process, it would not let me Restart or Shutdown. It would say files in use -- due to trying to compress, then cancelling, and it saying "Stopping..." for hours. Anything related to the finder was hung.

Fun, huh? Whatever the issue, AppleSupport (via escalation to an upper tier support person) hadn't seen it. Hopefully not some new bug that's gonna be popping up. I did find similar reports in this forum from 2020.
