unlocked iphone 5s

have bought my son an iphone 5s for Christmas stating that it is unlocked on putting in a sim it says that this sim is not supported under that activation policy currently assigned by activation server. looking at the settings of the phone it states that the provider for the phone is the same as the sim we are trying to put into the phone. any help would be much appreciated

The phone is NOT unlocked.


Return it and get your money back.

That device will be completely unusable as a phone in most of the world within the next few months. It is obsolete.

With the shutdown of 3G service, carriers are requiring devices capable of VoLTE, which means an iPhone 6 or newer.
