safari does not recognize main screen

on ventura 13.1, safari does not open start window on main screen anymore, but on the laptop display, which in settings is additional (google chrome does open start window on the main display).

what could be the reason for this?

setting: macbook pro, ventura 13.1, main display over usb-3 port, displays not synchronized (so main and additional)

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.11

Hi there username_2,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. To isolate this issue to anything possibly software related, we suggest booting the computer in safe mode. The steps to do so are found in the Apple Support article: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Apple silicon
1.Shut down your Mac.
2.Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3.Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4.Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.
Intel processor
1.Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2.Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3.You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

Let us know the outcome, and we can go from there.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi ArmMan1016,

Thank you very much – your suggestion did help and solved the issue with Safari. Also the second menu, which was shown on the secondary display, has gone :) (I thought that is a new Ventura feature ;) )

Now I found out, that the same problem exists with TextEdit, but didn't get solved with startup in safe mode.

Yesterday, I was chatting with an Apple Supporter and we found out, that the first window in Safari is opening depending on position of the dock – mine is left on the secondary screen instead of bottom on the main screen. This for me is to not interfere with the dock while working on the main screen. I already have left a message about that to Apple – maybe it has to do with the dock, since this is in TextEdit now, too.

Again, thank you very much for your help!

Hello username_2,

It sounds like you might've found an answer to what was happening. If you want to test it further, you could try setting up a new user account to see if the same thing happens there, which will tell you if the issue is system-wide or user account-specific. Check out this link for the steps you'll need to Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Let us know how it goes. Take care.
