Temporary folders being created that can't be deleted after editing from remote login.

This is a new problem for me since upgrading to Monterey, though it's basically a similar problem to one posted 5 years ago: File sharing - temporary empty folder are… - Apple Community - no real solution was provided then.

In my case I upgraded an iMac to Monterey from Mojave. I occasionally log in to my Account on the iMac from another computer on the local network (running Catalina) to edit files using Pages and Numbers. Once I save the edited file a temporary folder is created. It has the form name.pages.sb-adfdcf59-hztC6N. It cannot be deleted (The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items) even though I have read & write permissions on the file. It looks like the creation of the temporary folder is normal - I can see it being created when I replicate this process on two other computers not running Monterey - but in that case the folder is quickly deleted.

I'm having other issues with editing the files with a remote login from a different computer that predate Monterey, but I thought I'd deal with one issue at a time, especially since this seems to be a uniquely Monterey problem.

This sounds like more of a networking problem. Apple's networking capabilities are quite limited. Whenever a modern, Apple-friendly app tries to save a document, it does a little dance with creating a temporary directing, saving the modified document there, then swapping out the new version for the old version, and finally deleting the temporary folder. But across a network connection, all that might be too much.

You can avoid this by copying the remote file locally, making your edits on your current computer, and then copying the finished result back to the server when you're done.

Well that does work, but, quite frankly it feels like a 1980s solution. Not to mention the fact that it's cumbersome and inelegant and Apple is supposed to be about elegant computing. And also not to mention the fact that this never was a problem for years and years and years but has only popped up in a newer and supposedly "better" operating system. Apple has broken something with their "improvements" - in theory one would think they could fix it back to when it worked.

And finally not to mention the fact that at some point I'm told the file can't be saved (the other problem I alluded to in my original post) so that I have duplicate it, save it - removing the "copy" from the name, be asked if I want to replace the original file, and say yes. Talk about inelegant. And again this is a problem that didn't exist for years and years.
