No it doesn't. You simply plug it in.

pogster is correct. and just to add, I've been using mine for near a decade and have NEVER needed to download any drivers or apply updates over two separate Macs, and many different macOSes.
The reason I asked is that my SuperDrive used to work (used to be able to burn a blank CD with audio files I have on my MacBook Air (& my iMac also)) but now it doesn't. I thought the reason might be software related. Apparently software isn't a thing with the SuperDrive (USB connection).
Any ideas why it's not working? Should I bring it in to the Apple store to get it checked out?

first, I will ask, has the manner in which the superdrive is connected to the Mac changed? it will not work if you have started to use a dock or hub to connect it.
also, if you have an intel based Mac, I would try and reset the SMC as well as an NVRAM reset. please see
How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support
Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
but those options are not available on an M1 Mac. the only thing to try is to reboot the Mac.

since it has stopped working with two separate Macs at the same time, I would not rule out mechanical failure. Maybe having it checked out at an Apple Store is a good idea.
