This is so frustrating. This is exactly the same behaviour as last year with the update to 3.13. I wish there was a way to find out whether apple is aware and trying to help us.

Oh wow, I never even noticed that there is this new multi-tasking bar feature until I read the above posts...

Anyway, I have been having the same problems as well, and I had thought it was some kind of battery problem, like maybe my battery was nearing end of life and therefore it would shut down whenever I did anything strenuous, but it seems like many other people are having this same problem.

I tried doubleclicking my home button and wow I actually had like 10 things all open. I agree the feature (and lack of ability to turn it off) is kind of stupid.

Can anyone confirm if this actually solves the problem though? If so this means that the iPhone was crashing due to too many things running and lack of available memory??

As a last resort, has anyone with the problem tried a DFU restore as new? When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore.

...and I would also try a fresh iOS 4.1 firmware file. Maybe the original download was corrupted.

I just got off the phone with apple and a senior person told me this is the first they've heard about it, just like they told me last year. (and suddenly came up with a fix for it)

*So Call 1800MYAPPLE and let Apple know this is not just my problem!!!*

I described it as "the iphone shuts down completely and will not "wake up". Started with the upgrade to 4.0.2 and 4.1 did not fix it. Only works normally when plugged in."

Interesting, because the two Apple Care people I've talked to knew about the 3GS issues, only because they've received a number of calls about it. It's not an isolated incident that can be over looked. Enough people are complaining, and have contacted Apple.

Again, sounds like Apple is taking the deniability approach. Maybe the reported 4.2 in November is the fix 3GS users are waiting for? Apple hasn't chimed in on the 4.2, so that's just hopeful speculation.

iOS 4.2 is for the iPad specifically and will not be coming to the iPhone.

Dude...nothing you post is helpful. The statement you just made is completely false. Get the **** out of here if you have NOTHING to add.

Actually, it's for the iPad, iPhone and iTouch. You may have got your info mixed up, that this is the FIRST major update *for the iPad* from iOS 3 (since iOS 4, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 didn't come out for the iPad).

lol. I just realized you've already provided the info already. Too bad they didn't add any info as to fixes for older iPhones. I'm also thinking that the 4.2 will only be for the 3GS. Just speculation, but 4.1 maybe the last iOS for the 3G. If it is, it's a good thing that a lot of 3G users are happy with the 4.1 update.

Just some of the things people post on here is unbelievable. If Apple really did read these forums they'd probably shut the whole thing down.

I think you're right, 4.1 could be it for 3G and seems solid for them.

My 3GS has been the best phone up until 4.0.1. It works perfect until it hits 30% and won't function without being tethered to power (either wall charger or my battery case). So I guess it's still a great phone, just with 1/3 less battery than the rest of them :-\

I am out of warranty since July, haven't even bothered calling but sent an email hoping it gets passed along.

FWIW, I have a 3G and my phone is NOT solid with 4.1 (but WAS thru 4.0.1, unless you count the 3.X fiasco). I am also out of warranty, but calling did get me two levels of support and a promise of a escalation and callback. I don't want a new phone, i want software that works, just like last year.

Sorry to hear you're still having issues too. Some of the posts I've seen are making me think it might be worth a phone call to explain things and see what happens. I'm with you, I'm not interested in a new phone, the one I have is a year old and still looks brand new. I just want it to work as advertised.

Good luck with getting your problems resolved.

I called 1800-MYAPPLE last night and got the suggestion to do a restore (as new). I did it, but it hasn't solved the problem. I would guess that it stays on a few minutes longer, but not much.

The tech guy gave me a ticket number and told me to call back if it continues. SO, everyone CALLL if you can. (Note: my phone is out of warranty, but when I told him that it was fine before the updates, I got help without having to pay the fee.)

    Wow, this is so frustrating.

Tried double-tapping home on a regular basis to remove any excessive programs, so I usually only have phone/messages running in the background. Phone shuts down less often now it seems, but still happens -_-
