This is happening to me as well.
it works when plugged in to charge, but otherwise, it shuts off regularly, even though there is plenty of battery life left. I have to restart it (using the button on the top- pressed until the apple appears on the screen) each time it shuts off.
Is this a battery issue, or a phone issue? Solvable, or on its last breath?

I have looked everywhere, and can't find any solutions.
Thx.

I am having the same issue as well.

My 3GS would be charged to full (according to the battery indicator), but it would shuts off randomly whenever I use the application or browse the internet. I can't turn it back on and it would show a low-battery sign even though the battery life is still at more than 50% when it shuts off. Hard reboot dont even solve the problem, and the only way to turn it back on is to plug it into a charger.. even then, the phone would show that the battery is at whatever percentage when it was turned off (more than 50%). I bought the phone about 50 days ago and it was brand new out of the box, I never experienced this problem up until I upgraded to IOS4 and tried to download a game called Mancala, the download failed and the phone was frozen.. and then this problem started to show itself. I tried restoring the phone twice and even wiped off everything inside and start it off as a new phone, but the problem still persists.

Anyone know if the phone is hardware defective or is it the IOS4?

Thanks

Edit
Another note, when I plug it into the charger, the battery indicator would go from 50% to 100% in less than an hour. What could that be?

This is a known issue with older iPhones running 4.x.x. Everyone is crossing fingers that 4.1 will fix all the issues 3GS and 3G users have been dealing with since updating to iOS 4.

Although some have claimed that doing the reset and restore has worked for them. There are still plenty of people that it did nothing for. I even went as far as getting my 8 month old iPhone 3GS (which was working flawlessly from day one until the update) replaced with a brand new iPhone 3GS, with a fresh install of 4.02. Still having the same issues. It's not the phone, it's iOS 4 running on older iPhones.

This has just started happening to me as well.. My iPhone 3GS had no major issues until the update to iOS4, and suddenly it has started shutting off randomly (leaving a faint ghost image of whatever I was looking at) with plenty of battery life. It seems to be happening mostly when using Safari or other apps, so far it hasn't happened while using the phone or iPod functions. Restarting the phone does seem to drain the battery quite a bit, and if I've had to restart a few times, it will take 10-20 minutes to restart once plugged in. I've restored the phone twice hoping it would help but it hasn't really. Seems to be worse after the most recent update to 4.0.2. Any advice would be appreciated!

it doesnt matter what im doing, either listening to the ipod or on facebook or even playing a game. i've restored the phone twice and once more restored and set up as a new phone and it still doesnt do anything. ive turned off all push notifications, deleted all programs, deleted my email account, turned off wifi and bluetooth and it doesnt make a difference.

I was having the same problem...I just went to Apple Monday and was told that the newest upgrade download ( i beleive 4.1 ) would be available Wednesday 8/8/10..They said this upgrade would fix the problem. They also found that some of my apps were not working correctly..After the upgrade , they sid they would work right and i would have no problem.....Jay

I'm experiencing the same issue, I updated to 4.1 last night and this morning I had it happen again. I opened Safari (which I had been doing all morning) and then it crashed. When I tried to restart the phone, the battery low light icon came on and I had to charge the phone. Mind you the phone was at 68%. I was having this trouble prior to the update and was hoping this would fix it. Although before it was doing this at exactly 47%. The issue started after the 'last update' (I think 4.02??)as when I first updated to iOS4 I wasn't experiencing this issue and never experienced it on iOS3. My iPhone 3GS is just over a year old (got it the day of release). Going to the Genius Bar today as I need it 'fixed', however I'm not hopeful.

I have done a few restores and then backups, when that didn't work I performed a complete restart and started 'fresh', ie didn't run the backup so had to add contacts, music, apps, etc. back onto the phone to start over. But unfortunately that didn't work.

i went to the genius bar today and they said it is probably all the programs running on the multi-tasking bar. to fix the problem, double click on the home button to bring up your multi-tasking bar, and press & hold one icon until all the icons start to wiggle and delete all items from the multi-tasking section. this helped my iphone until i walked out of the store and it shut off again.

I've heard this a number of times as well. And the solution that others were thinking wasn't implemented by Apple in 4.1. Put an option to *turn off* Multitasking, like you can with Push Notification. When you quit an app, it just quits like it did in iOS 3.x.x. This multi-proceedure to quit an app is ridiculous. Like I said before, I once user friendly device is no longer so user friendly. Feels like I'm using a BB or an MS product.
