Bluetooth Headphones not working with Kids Messenger

Hi there,

My child got bluetooth headphones for Christmas and they work with everything else - FaceTime, Recordings, etc., except for Facebook Kids Messenger. Whenever he receives or makes a call, the audio switches to the external speakers and won't run through the bluetooth set.

I've tried changing the Accessibility-touch-audio call setting to Bluetooth and I've installed the latest update for iPad, but neither of these seem to have fixed the problem. Please help!

Thanks,

iPad Air, iOS 12

Yeah, it's definitely a video call routing issue with Kids Messenger. No reply from Facebook so I did some further testing. Voice calls actually work via BT and wired headphones, until you change to video, this then forces it out the iPad speakers, and not the headphones. Once video call is selected, and you change back to voice call, interestingly it does not route back out to headphones, instead stays via device speakers. When you disconnect the call, you can actually hear a click in the headphones, so they are activating, just not routing the video call correctly.

Noticed there was an update of Kids Messenger waiting in App Store -> version 227.0. Downloaded and installed, tested, still same issue. Also noticed an IOS update -> 16.3. Downloaded, installed, rebooted iPad, waited with hopeful patience, and ... no change, same issue :(

There's no bug report feature for Facebook however you can supply feedback from the following page -> https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/213724335832452/

It would be great if anyone/everyone to submit feedback to Facebook, either via the "Was this helpful" widget and selecting No, or via the Feedback Form -> https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/268228883256323 as the more people that bring light to the problem, the quicker the fix.

Also noticing that with apple wired headphones. Was able to also confirm that this is a Video Call only bug, the second we swapped the kids to voice only it went straight to the headphones. All other video/audio chat programs work with headphones but Facebook Messenger Kids does not. It is not specific to a specific model of iPhone as well as both my sons have the issue on their devices and they are using two different models of iPhone. Left feedback on the link someone else posted with FB. I'm telling my kids to stick to audio only until it's fixed.

All, if you haven't already done so, please submit feedback to Facebook of bug via links in my post on Jan 23, 2023 10:37 PM. Squeaky wheel -> grease etc. etc.

I have also submitted the issue via the below. Please do so from the device your kids are using ...

Report that something isn't working on Facebook:

  1. Log in to Facebook on a computer.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  3. Select Help & support, then select Report a problem and follow the on-screen instructions.

I have this exact same issue - iPad 9th Gen running IOS 15.7 (19H12). Headphones working across board on all apps EXCEPT Messenger Kids (via both bluetooth and wired). Tore my hair out troubleshooting it as the headphones were actually working in-app on my daughters old iPad Air 2. Not much on the internet about the issue either, until I came across this thread.

I've gone through all headphone / sound / accessibility / app settings on both devices and all were identical, i.e. same Messenger Kids app version, all permissions accepted etc. Removed and reinstalled the app, no change. I realised the Air 2 had not been used for a month, so checked and sure enough it was running older IOS version 15.6.1. Updated to 15.7 and it's still working, so it appears it's only affecting our iPad 9th Generation device (can see OP using iPad Air IOS 12, so doesn't look like it's confined to just our model).

I've submitted feedback to Facebook about the issue, but i'd be keen to hear from other users having the issue what device model they are using, app version and IOS version.

I came here to find answers and worked it out myself! Hundreds of complaints about the same thing BUT, has anyone considered that maybe it’s deliberate so that online predators can’t groom your kids in silence right under your nose!? Maybe it’s a safety feature so that any conversation they are having can be heard across the house (as annoying as it is MOST the time) MAYBE so you can eaves drop on their convos, so you can pickup on possible bullying etc. It would be good to have a setting option though, the kids chats and background noises can drive ya bloody bonkers!!
