White wisps in iMac monitor

Hey, Apple Community!

Could anyone explain how and/or why these white wisps are present in my iMac monitor?

The unit has never been dropped or clean improperly. They're most noticeable when the monitor is off/asleep.

If anyone has a fix, I'm all ears!

Thank you!

iMac, macOS 10.13

To be completely honest the computer is simply worn out. It's almost 15 years old and was not designed to run that long. You can either live with it the way it is or consider replacing it.

It has no monetary value so that means if you invest any money in it, it's money down the tubes. Apple Stores or AASPs will not work on it due to its obsolescence. If you want to replace the display yourself you can, however you will need to search for a good used one on E-Bay or another similar site.

If I was in your shoes, I'd seriously consider replacing it.

Best of luck!

Your welcome!

It may be a good time to search for some sales, remember the new 24" iMacs (if that is what you decide you want) have SSDs and will be much quicker. If you get another Mac, please do the following:

  1. Get one with the same size storage or more as your old Mac. For example, if the old Mac has a 1TB HD then replace with a 1TB (or larger) SSD.
  2. Buy one with 16 GB of RAM, why, the RAM is NOT upgradeable on new Macs.
  3. Finally, to migrate from the old Mac to a new one, please follow the instructions in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant
