"Play a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone

In the Voice Memos app , tap a recording and use the playback controls to listen to it.

The Voice Memos list screen with a selected recording at the top. The recording timeline has a playhead, which you can drag to go to a specific place in the recording. There are beginning and end times at either end of the timeline. Above the timeline is the More Actions button, which you can tap to copy, share, edit, or duplicate a recording, and more. Below the timeline are the Playback Settings button, which you can use to set playback options, the skip back 15 seconds button, the play button, the skip forward 15 seconds button, and the delete button. Below these controls is a list of recordings that can be opened with a tap.

Skip backward 15 seconds

The Fast Forward Fifteen Seconds button.

Skip forward 15 seconds

Tip: While the recording is open, you can tap its name to rename it.


Change the playback speed

You can play a recording at a faster or slower speed.

  1. In the list of recordings, tap the recording you want to play.
  2. Tap the Playback Settings button, then drag the slider toward the tortoise  for a slower speed, or toward the rabbit  for a faster speed.
  3. Tap the Close button, then tap the Play button to play the recording.

Note: Changing the playback speed doesn’t change the recording itself, only how fast it plays.

Enhance a recording

When playing a recording, you can enhance it to reduce background noise and echo.

  1. In the list of recordings, tap the recording you want to enhance.
  2. Tap the Playback Settings button, then turn on Enhance Recording.
  3. Tap the Close button, then tap the Play button to play the recording.

Note: Turning on Enhance Recording doesn’t change the recording itself, only how it sounds when you play it.

Skip over gaps when playing back a recording

Voice Memos can analyze your audio and automatically skip over gaps when playing it.

  1. Tap the recording you want to play.
  2. Tap the Playback Settings button, then turn on Skip Silence.
  3. Tap the Close button, then tap the Play button to play the recording.

Note: Turning on Skip Silence doesn’t change the recording itself, only how it sounds when you play it.

Turn off the playback options

To return all the playback options to their original settings, tap the Playback Settings button, then tap Reset."


If you're connected to a speaker, it should play there like all other sounds.
