Mail sorting

2020 27" iMac, OS 12.3 (Monterey). Mail program continually re-sorts itself. I prefer the Inbox view settings to be by date, oldest at the top.

Periodically when viewing mailboxes, the mail program will suddenly intercede and resort, scrolling all the way to the top (i.e., to display the oldest messages). I do ask the program to do this, but for some reason it decides to anyway. Is there a logical way to get it to stop doing this? With 4000 messages in my inbox (which should not be the issue), it is an annoying interruption.

There have been many updates to Monterey since the release of Monterey 12.3 released Mar 14, 2022

The current version is now Monterey 12.6.2
