photos greyed out

When my photo library was updated literally hundreds of photos are now greyed out. I see that if I "revert to original" I can get the preview image back, but doing that would take me days? Is there a reason why this happened or fix this in a batch?

My version of photos is v6 in mac osx 11.6.8.

You'd better check again. The 2019 iMac came with macOS 10.14.4 (18E2034) preinstalled and couldn't run 116.8 El Capitan. Check the  ➙ About This Mac menu item to verify the model year and system running.

It would have to be a 2015 iMac model or earlier to run El Capitan.

As for your thumbnail issue you can select large numbers of images and do a rotate and then rotate back to rebuild the thumbnails. Try it on a couple and see if that does the trick. If so then go for big numbers each time.
