Why does my iPhone get so hot?

Without fail every time I plug my phone in and use it it will get too hot and start stuttering and almost becoming unusable. This happens again without fail every time I plug it in. It also happens when my phone is not plugged in but after a longer period of time. I’m not straining the phone with any strenuous tasks simply playing a basic game or texting.
