PhotoBooth won't take a video on MacBook Air M2

I have a new MacBook Air with the M2 chip, and I just tried to make a quick video on it with PhotoBooth. It doesn't work! PhotoBooth counts down from 3 to 1, then makes a clicking sound, and it doesn't record anything.

I saw that another user asked a similar question in 2021. And over 4,800 other users clicked the button to say that they had this problem, too. I know that the first response on this thread might be: "Make sure your software is up to date and you're running the very newest and latest version of macOS." This is a community conversation stopper, which implies that all previous versions of macOS won't work anymore with PhotoBooth and that it's the end-user's fault for not updating the OS, because "of course" all Mac software will fail if you don't update it constantly.

I also have a 2020 Intel MacBook running an older version of macOS... and PhotoBooth records video on it just fine. This could be a problem with Macs on the M1 or M2 chip. Anyone have any insights?

Hey there sfsmusique,

While multiple people may be reporting the same thing, there are different possibilities for what may have caused this particular issue. By going through troubleshooting for each case, we can get this resolved.

Moving forward with troubleshooting, we'd like to confirm more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

First let's have you start your Mac in safe mode and test to see if the issue persists. Those steps are outlined in the resource below, if needed.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the issue persists while in safe mode, restart the Mac, create another user and test once move.

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Should the issue remain in another user, please provide us with some more details to help with isolating this issue you've been experiencing.

  1. Any issues recording videos in other apps besides Photo Booth?
  2. We understand that your Mac is new, but has Photo Booth recorded in the past on it without any issues, and if yes, when did this start to occur?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Cheers!
