why doesn’t my phone emit a pinging noise when siri has located it and states “pinging your 12 mini now”

I frequently set my phone down while I’m connected to it via my AirPods. I agree that I should get out of this habit, but it happens often because i frequently listen to audio content while i work and I don’t get a good signal while the phone is in my pocket. Until I get out of the habit of forgetting where I set it down, it would be really handy if my phone would actually emit the pinging noise when Siri says “it’s nearby. pinging your iPhone 12 mini now.” It does NOT emit the pinging noise, but the usual “a sound was played on iPhone” email appears in my inbox nevertheless. The pinging noise functions fine when prompted using Find My on another phone. I see that several others have asked this question without a solution. So I am not optimistic.

Hello mahrmut,

It sounds like you are not able to ping your iPhone.

We understand how important this is, and we are here to help.

Have you restarted your iPhone since you first noticed this? If not, let's do that now: Restart your iPhone

While a restart can seem unimportant, it can actually resolve many minor issues with the device.

1) Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
The volume button is located on the left side of the device, and the side button is located on the right
2) Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3) To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? For example, which iPhone and Apple Watch are you currently using?

Which watchOS and iOS versions do you have installed?

Also, when did you first notice this?

Having this information can help us with possible next steps toward finding a solution.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

Mahrmut,

Got it. This is definitely unexpected behavior. Since the issue persists after completing several troubleshooting steps such as, restarting and updating your device to iOS 16.2 There may be an underlying issue with the software. Therefore,, we suggest that you reach out to Apple Support directly. You can follow this link to connect with them: Get Support

I’ve done all of the usual troubleshooting. i’m running 16.2 now. I never noticed it before recently because it never occurred to me to ask Siri “where is my phone” while my AirPods are connected to it but I can’t find it. To reiterate: my phone DOES emit a loud ping noise when commanded to do so from eg my girlfriend’s phone using find my.
