Understood dearsufi,

It is expected that when the AirPods are connected, all audio will move from the iPhone speakers to those of the AirPods. It will not simultaneously play audio from the AirPods and the iPhone. In order to hear the ring from the iPhone when the AirPods are not in use, then you need to disconnect from the AirPods manually or return them to their case.

Hi dearsufi,

It appears that when using your AirPods, you are not hearing phone calls ring. If you haven't already, you could try restarting your iPhone 12 Pro Max. This will refresh the iOS and make it connect to your AirPods again, which may help resolve this. If needed, the steps below show how:

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

  1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Those steps are from this article: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

You'll also want to ensure that your iPhone is fully up-to-date, as being up-to-date can also sometimes help resolve issues:

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."

That information is from here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Please let us know if those steps help or if you've already tried those steps.

Take care!

Dearsufi,

Got it!

"You can automatically direct the audio of phone or FaceTime calls to the iPhone speaker, a Bluetooth headset, or your hearing devices. iPhone can also automatically answer calls after a specific duration.

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing, then choose an audio destination.
  2. Tap Auto-Answer Calls, turn on Auto-Answer Calls, then set the duration of time before the call is answered by tapping the Decrement button or the Increment button."

You can find more details here: Route and automatically answer calls on iPhone

We hope this helps.

Be well.
