Studio Display requires a Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 port running macOS 12.3 or later, or an iPad Pro or iPad Air with a USB-C port running iPadOS 15.4 or later.
Compatible Mac and iPad models
Studio Display supports a resolution of 5120 x 2880 on these devices:
iPad Pro with USB-C
iPad Air (5th generation)

Thank you so much for taking the time to contribute and help. I had checked all that and my iPad pro is the newest model. Turns out that the solution was a lot less refined: the Apple support suggested as a last resort to unplug the Apple Studio Display from the power, reconnect and then connect to the iPad. Then I could double the screen.
