… sometimes I can change it in one try. Sometimes it reverts back to the gray initial numerous times before I can get it to stick. I almost gave up this time, but it finally worked. Makes me crazy.
Why does it do that?

I did see another thread here somewhere about this, but I didn’t understand the explanation. I don’t get what you mean either about changing the avatar because I don’t think that’s ever happened to me.
The little profile pictures that some folks have are also called "Avatars".
Red circle - Generic abbreviations
Green circle - Actual picture (profile)
Yellow circles - Avatars
You can even create a custom avatar of your own.
Wow! You've got me! I'd like to be able to help you out with this, but I've never experienced this problem.
Often times, when I'm texting somebody, I get a little notification that the other party has changed their avatar (Profile Pic). Sometimes I'll choose to accept their new one or I'll just leave it as whatever I have it set as currently.
I did some looking around in my phone but I wasn't able to find any settings for it.
I'm wondering if it has anything to do with your Apple ID and backups???
Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.
