No Sleep stage tracking when Sleep Focus is manually toggled

I have a Sleep schedule set up, and when this runs automatically, sleep stages are tracked as expected.

However, yesterday I needed to manually toggle Sleep Focus off so that I didn’t miss some important notifications.

I then toggled Sleep Focus back on and went to bed.

In the morning I found that the watch had tracked only my time in bed, not any sleep stage data.

Is this how it's expected to behave...?

Some searching online suggests a few other people have found this behaviour to be unpredictable at times, but I can't find anything conclusive.

I’m using watchOS 9.2 and iOS 16.2.

oology,

Thanks for the additional information regarding your sleep-tracking issue.

The next step is to confirm that all your sleep settings are correct. This simple step can resolve issues like this:

Track your sleep on Apple Watch and use Sleep on iPhone

If the settings are correct and you need continued assistance, please reach out to the AppleCare phone support team via this link: Get Support.

Cheers!

Thank you for the suggestion - however, in this case, I don't really want to take the risk of manually toggling Sleep Focus mode again and potentially missing a night of sleep stage tracking.

Could you confirm whether it's the expected behaviour for sleep stage tracking to not be captured when Sleep Focus is manually toggled?

Hello Mike_P1 - thanks for the reply.

I've checked the settings and can confirm that they are as described on the linked page in your post, and that the sleep stage tracking works as expected under those circumstances.

However...

The question that isn't addressed by the linked page is: what's the expected behaviour if the user manually toggles Sleep Focus off and on, after it has already been triggered by the Sleep Schedule?

So it's still not clear (to me) whether I should have expected sleep stage tracking to have worked in that situation.
