Missing lots of emails

Anyone else having issues with Apple Mail? Since yesterday I'm suddenly missing everything up to the end of November 22 on my iMac. I have tried rebuilding my inbox but still missing. I've checked the Bin incase I deleted by mistake. I've checked iCloud, same thing. Mail on my iPhone missing even more, back to July 22.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

Hello jeanfrombristol,

Let's follow the steps below to see if we can retrieve the missing emails on your Mac.

"If messages seem to be missing from mailboxes in the Mail app  on your Mac, try these suggestions.

If the problem persists, you may need to rebuild a mailbox.

If you set up Time Machine to back up files on your Mac, you can use the backups to restore content that Mail downloaded (based on options set in Mail and on your Mac). See Restore items backed up with Time Machine."

If emails appear to be missing in Mail on Mac

For help with the mail on your phone let's try these steps:

"Things to check first

  1. Check the system status of iCloud Mail.
  2. Check that you turned on iCloud Mail:
    • On your Mac, open the Mail app then choose Mail >Preferences. Click Accounts, then select your iCloud account in the sidebar. Under Account Information, make sure that the account is turned on and the status is online.
    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and check that Mail is turned on.
  1. Make sure you that haven't exceeded your iCloud storage limit. If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, learn how to make more space available in iCloud
  2. Make sure that you're using the latest version of software on your device."

We appreciate the update, jeanfrombristol,

Since you haven't had a complete Time Machine backup in some time, we would suggest that you contact Apple directly as they can investigate your account further with you to determine if you can recover these messages. We wouldn't want you to restore your Time Machine backup and risk losing your data between the time of your last backup and now. You can find their contact details here: Contact Apple Support

Take care!

Thank you. I have tried literally everything you have suggested apart from restoring my iMac from Time Machine. I will try that next.

However, what is very odd is there is no explanation for why these emails are missing, particularly as there is a difference between what I can see on my iMac and iPad and what is showing on my iPhone.

I am running OS Monterey 12.6 on a iMac Retina 5K 2020. On the iMac emails are missing between November 21st 2022 and yesterday December 29th. They are not in the bin, junk or Archive or Recovered files and are also not showing in iCloud on the internet.

My iPhone is a 12 Mini running OS 16.2. In Mail I am missing emails from July 27th 2022 up to yesterday, which would seem an awful lot of emails I may have deleted by mistake, and is not consistent with what is showing on the iMac.

I seem to be sending and receiving email as normal on all devices since yesterday.

I have not exceeded my iCloud storage and I am signed in with the same Apple ID and email address on all my devices.

Thanks, I have reinstalled the OS in Recovery to see if that did anything. Still missing the emails.

I can't see how to restore Mail from my Time Machine backups.

In recovery mode I can choose to restore from Time Machine, but the last Full backup was June 2020, when I did the first backup. If I enter Time Machine from my desktop I can go back a few days before the issue with Mail but I can't open the Mail application, I get the message 'You can’t open the application “Mail” because it is in a Time Machine backup.' I not sure what I'm trying to restore, as my mail is in iCloud and the missing emails are also missing if I log into Mail at iCloud.com .

Sorry if I'm being stupid, but I don't really want to restore everything on my iMac if I don't have to. I'm sure this is ultimately an iCloud issue given the discrepancies between Mail on my iMac and on my iPhone.

Any other ideas? Can I uninstall then reinstall Mail? I've tried rebuilding my inbox. I only use one email address and that is enabled iCloud IMAP and is showing status as online.

In any case, why would any of my mail settings have changed without my knowledge?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
