iPhone GPS or Location Update Rate?

Hi,

I am trying to find out the GPS/Location update rate that the iPhone14 can accomplish. Most GPS update rates are 1hz (1 location update per second). I am hoping that the newest iPhones can provide a faster update rate.

Also I would like to know the accuracy of the GPS. It is 100meter, 50meter, 10meter, 3meter?

Where could I find this information?

Thanks,

Adam

For feature requests:

We’re not folks that work for Apple, we’re other users and other third-party developers.

The path to submit feedback to the folks that do work for Apple is via the developer program:

Bug Reporting - Apple Developer

…or via feedback:

Product Feedback - Apple

For accuracy:

GPS accuracy varies. (Particularly if selective availability (SA) gets enabled in your area.)

https://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/performance/accuracy/

When GPS is not available, which is more often than any of us might prefer, location will fall back to Wi-Fi and cellular, and location accuracy can be off by kilometers.

High-accuracy GPS tracking also has power and privacy considerations and time. If the user selects approximate location, the reported location and the actual location can or will be off by a few kilometers. Achieving high accuracy can require several minutes’ unobstructed monitoring of signals, and with the associated power consumption for the radio.

Hi Mr Hoffman,

I use dedicated high performance gps sensors where I work. We get 5hz, 10hz, 20hz updates and accuracy down to 1m depending on the application. I do hope to find out what the iphone can accomplish. From my understanding is that the iphone still uses cellular signal for location and not a dedicated gps. However maybe this has changed recently. The accuracy seems to be quite good when I use maps.

I did look over some developer notes, but I could not find real specs or performance.

Apple Developer Documentation

I will try submitting Product Feedback to find the answer and real specs plus keep looking.

Anyone else that has an answer, feel free to reply.

Thank you,

Adam

Per what specs are available, an iPhone 14 uses a mixture of GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou satellite positioning, digital compass, Wi‑Fi network positioning, Cellular network positioning, and iBeacon micro-location.

Satellite positioning takes a minute or so, and requires adequate signal coverage, and obviously also requires power for the satellite radio. An iPhone will prefer to avoid that, absent specific app requirements.

An iPhone won't compete with purpose-built radio-location receivers.

As might surprise some folks, the US requires licenses for receivers using non-US positioning systems, absent specific approvals or waivers or US licenses for those systems. The US granted a waiver for the reception and use of Galileo GNSS satellite system back in November of 2018, for instance. IIRC, Galileo was the first waiver for that, too.
