Yes, you can update your iPad to iPadOS 16.2 - while leaving your iPhone with an earlier version of iOS (iOS 15.7.2 is current - this incorporating recent essential security updates).


Some functionality and new features included within iOS/iPadOS16 will not be available to your iPhone. Until your iPhone is similarly updated, you will not be able to activate or use Apple’s Advanced Data Protection.
