SOLVED: iPhone "Share My Location" feature wasn't working
PROBLEM
A family of four enabled family sharing and location sharing on their iPhones (all iOS 16.2) but one member didn't appear on the FindMy map. She could see them but they couldn't see her.
INCOMPLETE SETTINGS
On problematic iPhone
• Family Sharing ON (Settings, Family, Automatically Share Location)
• Location Services ON (Settings, Privacy & Security)
• Find My iPhone ON (Settings, AppleID [user's name])
SYMPTOMS
• In the problematic iPhone's FindMy app/Devices, her own iPhone showed up with "...This iPhone."
• In the problematic iPhone's FindMy/People, her own name was listed with "No location found"
• Other family members' FindMy app didn't show the problematic iPhone's user
SOLUTION
A deeper share setting needed enabling in the problematic iPhone.
• Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, System Services, Share My Location (was off)
NOTES
There are lots of "Share My Location" settings in iOS 16.2 on iPhones.
Obvious
• Settings, Family (if enabled), Location Sharing, Automatically Share Location
• Settings, Find My, Share My Location
• In a Contact, scroll to bottom, Share My Location (indefinitely, end of day, 1 hr)
Obscure
• Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, System Services (bottom of list), Share My Location
• Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Share My Location, (& again) Share My Location
FEEDBACK
It'd be great if iOS either provided a consolidated view of all Share My Location settings and/or popped up a warning with a setting link when people enable Share My Location while the deeper System Services/Share My Location setting is disabled.
Before the family asked for help, they spent lots of time, maybe hours, wrestling with it.
