Why does my light not stay in my AirPods when they charge

Based on how my AirPods charge, I can tell you that the status light does not stay on while they are charging. As for why Apple did this, I am not sure, but I do know that you can "hard-tap" your AirPods to check the charging status as long as you have AirPods Pro or AirPods 3rd Generation (a green or amber light will appear).
Note: Your AirPods will require a hard tap (not a gentle tap like you would use to select something on your iPhone); more like the amount of pressure required to use the Force Click on your Mac trackpad.
