Updating Outdated MacBook

I have the MacBook Air 11 inch mid 2013 Version 10.12.6. As you may already can tell, access to apps, etc. are limited for me and I just found out about Big Sur and that you could update your computer. I just want to be safe before doing anything.. So for the status and version of my Mac, am I able to update my Mac whatsoever? I also have 80+ available GBs.

Hello!

Yes, you can upgrade to macOS Big Sur 11. Get it here: How to download macOS - Apple Support.

I'd recommend you create a Time Machine backup first: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.

A mid 2013 MacBook Air can be upgraded to the latest version of Big Sur macOS 11 but no later. See: How to download macOS - Apple Support

Be aware that if you upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur you will also need to update any non-Apple 32-bit apps if you have any. See: https://www.macworld.com/article/232735/how-to-check-if-mac-software-is-32-or-64-bit.html

So for backing up my Mac, the only option I have for updating it shows me "Other Airport Time Capsule" as my only option and gives me nothing. When I click on the Time Machine Icon on my menu bar, and click "Browse Other Backup Disks" It gives me no options. Is that normal? I've looked up other solutions but they don't help at all.

To use Time Machine, you need an external storage device that's larger than your internal drive. Do you have one connected to your Mac?
