I spoke with Apple Support. The answer is that the VPN status icon appears only on the Control Center screen, and there is no option to put it on other screens. I suggested in my review of the Apple Support session that users be given the option of adding the VPN status icon to the dynamic island.

Hello QisoA,

Your iPhone should show the VPN status icons from this resource. If the VPN icon isn't appearing in the status bar, you can also check for that in the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen. This resource has more details, for reference: Status icons and symbols on your iPhone

Should you not see that status icon, or be able to check on your VPN connection in Control Center, let's restart your iPhone using the steps below: Restart your iPhone

1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
The volume button is located on the left side of the device, and the side button is located on the right
2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

Restarting can sometimes help address odd behaviors.

Should that still persist, are you experiencing the same behavior with any other status icons?

Let us know, and we'll keep moving forward from there.

Thank you, Chuck. When I restarted my phone, I had to reconnect to the VPN. Once I did that, VPN showed in the status bar in the Control Center but still does not show in the status bar otherwise.

(I don’t know why I had to reconnect to the VPN (Norton Secure VPN) after restarting phone. I never had to do that on my 6s, which also had Norton VPN.)
