iCloud + storage

I purchased an additional 50 GB of storage to be able to backup my iPhone to transfer everything to a new iPhone. Once the transfer was made it now says I have used 49.3 GB of the 50 GB of which the backup takes up the most. Do I have to keep that backup And do I have to keep the additional 50 GB of storage or will my backups just contain the differences moving forward? I have a 14 pro max with 250 GB of storage.

Once you have use the backup of the old phone to setup the new phone you can delete the backup of the old phone. See instructions in Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

If you want to backup your new phone (or sync data such as iCloud Photos Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support ), you will need iCloud space to do that. It is a good idea to do it so that your data isn't lost if your iPhone is broken or lost or quits working for some reason. Once you have deleted the backup of the old phone you can see if you have enough storage with the free 5GB plan to do the things you want to do. If you do, you can cancel upgraded iCloud storage by downgrading to the free 5GB plan. See instructions in the following Apple article: Downgrade or cancel your iCloud+ plan - Apple Support
