A2618 AirPod V2

I have a set of AirPod Pro's V2 which are showing a model number A2618. According to Apple they are are under service and support until November 2023. However when connected they show that their coverage has expired when I check the device through my iPhone 13. Their current firmware release is 5A377. I've followed the instructions to force and update but even though I followed the instructions to the letter, after about 5 minutes the AirPods show disconnected (although they will immediately connect if I close the case and then reopen it and obviously are paired. I also notice that the A2618 model is not shown on any documentation from Apple on their site as the active model number on the current Pro V2 products. I've read posts on other sources that the A2618 was the early model version of the Pro V2. I called Apple support last night and Tech support assured me that I am covered.

I'm confused since I can't seem to force the firmware upgrade but I wonder if my A2618 model will not be able to upgrade. Tech support lost my call as I was speaking to them and calling back last night got me on a forever waiting for a support person.

To make matters worse I have a low volume buzz which I can't diagnose. I can hear the buzz in the right ear with both AirPods in my ears. If I don't play music I eventually hear the buzz stop (much like the airpod is shutting of the radio of the airpod). If I play some music, I'll hear the buzz start and within a microsecond the airpod plays. I I quit the music then I'm left with buzz in that right ear. Within 5 minutes the buzz will stop much like the airpod shutting down due to not being actively engaged.

Somewhere I was hoping upgrading the firmware might help, but with that seeming to be an impossible task, I made an appointment with the genius bar on Tuesday. No telephone support today due to the Jan 1 holiday.

Thought someone frequenting the community might recognize my problems. Buzzing, lack of being able to update firmware, the model number of my Pro V2, and the face that the bluetooth info showing the status says my coverage has expired (even though to Apple support and the check coverage site from Apple both show different).

I just thought I'd bring this to a quick conclusion. I went out with my new Pro V2 today in a noisy area and found the the noise reduction feature wasn't making any difference in reducing background noise while I was in a noisy restaurant. I planned on adding this to my laundry list when going to my genius bar appointment on Tues.

Lo and behold I got an email from the seller of my Pro's. I had emailed them about some of the concerns I listed in my previous post. The email from the seller said they had investigated further and found that their stock that they bought were counterfeits. They offered to give me a 100% refund. So back they go!

What is interesting however that the counterfeit fooled iOS16.2 on my iPhone 13. The box was sealed and a perfect copy. Serial numbers matched the box and the case and EarPods. As a matter of fact the only issue was the fact that the serial number as shown by the blue tooth device display didn't match. The info I gave Apple support of the serial number showed it was under warranty and even the Apple website showed the serial number was valid and under warranty. The smoking gun was the display of the device on the bluetooth connection said the warranty was expired. Apple support didn't seem to be concerned about that.

So I paid for the unit on credit card so I do have recourse if the seller doesn't give me a refund also. But who ever made this clone did a heck of a job since the AirPods did sound better than my old gen to AirPods, but has the days went on things started going south. They got around iOS16.2 and 2 separate facets with Apple telephone support and the verification process available through the web.

First time I've ever gotten taken on an Apple product from an alternate source. I've got a feeling the genius bar would have sniffed this out, although who knows they may have made a replacement if they accessed the same records showing it under warranty.
