Well, you would have to keep it powered on continuously, logged in to an Apple ID, and it would need an Internet connection. I think a $25 AirTag or Tile would be much more practical.

How old and outdated? And do you want to use it to track another device, or as a device to be tracked?

a device to be tracked, like a "Tile". throw an old phone in a car, boat trailer let's say, and if stolen use find my phone.
