Icons and Launchpad

A previous question was asked about creating an application icon and having it in Launchpad. The answer was to drag it to the Dock. Dock does not equal Launchpad. So how do you get the icon onto Launchpad. If I open Launchpad and select (open), say Lightroom software, the software opens and the LR icon shows up on the Dock with an active indication (a period). If I right click and Remove it from the Dock, it is still shown in Launchpad. I subscribed to Photoshop but the download did not create an icon in Launchpad and when I drag the PS app to the Dock, it still does not show up in Launchpad. And when I remove the PS icon from the Dock, it is not in Launchpad. So what is the trick?
