When (after how long) and how do Apple iDevices refuse to accept a charge over uncertified lightning cables? (not mFi certified)

I've noticed lots of listings on temu for cables that claim to be, but the price is below the licensing cost. (Priced at $1-2, and licensing alone is reportedly about $3/cable.)

I think newer devices are more finicky. My 2012 ipad can use cables that my iPhone XR refuses to use.

I've noticed a pattern where cables work for a while (months) and then stop working with a given device, but will still work with other devices, while a mFi certified cable keeps working.

It seems like Apple is periodically updating a database of unauthorized cables that it sends out to devices and tells 'em to start refusing a charge from them.

I guess I could mention in my OP that this is what was behind my question...
