Start with this...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Does it work in the new account?
Well, I did all that and it made no difference. When I open the New Message window in Mail, there is no From field. Recently I added my wife as a possible sender so she could use it for email to her friends, rather that my name being the only option. This seems to have set it off. What do you think?
Thanks for your response, but it didn't help. I shutdown, then restarted (with the power button on the back) while holding the shift key down. What next?
I'm having a hard time imaging what this could be other than Disk Corruption, especially considering the last test we did.
I'd reinstall the OS.
If I am going to reinstall the OS, should I go ahead and install a more recent version (Catalina)? What is the most current OS I can use on this late 2012 computer?
