Archiving Gmail in the Mail app

Decided to give the updated Mail app a try again, however I'm hitting one block that it is making it unusable: archiving Gmail (well, there's two if you include the auto-marking previews as read, but I know that's not fixable!)

Whenever I use the Archive option the item remains in the inbox views and any smart inboxes - and looking at the underlying mail data directly it remains in the Google inbox. It appears that 'archiving' in Mail doesn't remove the Gmail inbox label. This isn't a problem I've had in any other IMAP client, where archiving would strip the tags and just leave the messages in All Mail (the behaviour I'm after).

Any ideas?

Hi flnkr,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. It sounds like your Archived mailbox may not be set up correctly on your Mac. You can change those settings from Mail > Settings > Accounts > Mailbox behaviors as mentioned in Change Mailbox Behaviors settings in Mail on Mac. From there, check the Archive mailbox to see which is selected since that will be where archived mail is sent.

Take care.

Thanks for the idea, but it’s already pointing at the GMail All Mail folder (aka label). And the IMAP settings in gmail are correct too - every other IMAP mail app works just fine.

Further testing seems to indicate that archiving a message twice works. Current hypothesis is that for email where Google rules have applied a second label archiving in mail only removes one label at a time. So it’s not exactly archiving, more clearing a label. I could stop gmail applying labels but that would break a lot of workflows.

Will keep playing…
