Missing Genre

I have transferred several thousand songs from my iMac to my iPhone in six genres. When I go to my music on the iPhone, only five of the genres are displayed. How do I get the missing genre to be listed? I am extremely frustrated.

Hi guido239,

If you have ample space on your iPhone for all of the songs, you may need restart your Mac and iPhone and sync again:

  1. "Connect your device to your Mac.
  2. You can connect your device using a USB or USB-C cable or using a Wi-Fi connection. To turn on Wi-Fi syncing, see Sync content between your Mac and iPhone or iPad over Wi-Fi.
  3. In the Finder  on your Mac, select the device in the Finder sidebar.

A device selected in the Finder sidebar.

4. Select Music in the button bar.

The button bar showing Music selected.

5. Select the “Sync music onto [device name]” tickbox to turn on syncing of your music.

6. With the tickbox selected, syncing is set to transfer all your music to your device.

“Sync music onto device” tickbox appears with additional options for syncing your entire library or only selected items and including videos and voice memos in the syncing process.

7. To sync a selection of music, click “Selected playlist, artists, albums and genres”.

8. Select the tickbox for the individual items you want to sync in the music list. Deselect the tickbox for any item you don’t want to sync.

9. Click Artists, Albums, Genres or Playlists to see your content organised by that category.

10. Select syncing options:

    • Select the “Include videos” tickbox to include videos when syncing.
    • Select the “Include voice memos” tickbox to include voice memos when syncing
    • Select the “Automatically fill free space with songs” tickbox to have your Mac fill the free space on your device with songs when syncing. Use this option if you have a large music library on your Mac but don’t have room to sync all your music to your device. This option syncs as many songs as possible.

11. When you’re ready to sync, click Apply."

Thanks for the reply, guido239.

You have the ability to change the genre to the correct one if it's not updating properly. On your Mac, open the Music app, click Songs, then find one of the songs that would be classified as Rock. Once you locate it, choose Song > Info, then change the genre to Rock or the genre you prefer. Once it's updated, sync your music with your iPhone again if doing so manually. If you use Sync Library, then this information will automatically update on both devices.

This resource will help if you need to update or change song information in the future:

We hope this helps!

I have about 3,500 mp3 files in 5 genres of music (Classic, Easy Listening, Jazz, Rock, and Soundtrack) that I want to transfer from my iMac to my iPhone. I have ample space on the phone. All of the music files appear in my phone. However, my phone only displays the following genres: Classic, Easy Listening, Jazz, and Soundtrack. The Rock Genre is not displayed despite the fact that the songs are on my iPhone. How do I get the Rock Genre to be displayed?
